Quit Eating Like a Sumo Wrestler: A Better Weight-Loss Strategy After 40
Want to know something interesting about how sumo wrestlers traditionally eat?
Their goal is to get bigger.
Although individual routines vary, sumo wrestlers have traditionally trained hard in the morning before eating breakfast. After training, they consume an enormous meal designed to provide the calories needed to gain and maintain significant body mass.
A traditional meal may include chankonabe---a hearty stew filled with meat, fish, tofu and vegetables---along with large quantities of rice and other calorie-dense foods.
What often happens after that massive meal?
They rest or take a nap.
Later in the day, they eat another large meal. Instead of spreading their nutrition evenly throughout the day, they concentrate a tremendous number of calories into a couple of very large meals.
Why?
Because gaining mass is part of their sport.
Unfortunately, many middle-aged Americans accidentally follow a watered-down version of the sumo wrestler eating plan---even though losing weight is their goal.
Are You Accidentally Eating Like a Sumo Wrestler?
Does this routine sound familiar?
- Skip breakfast or survive on coffee
- Run around all morning without eating
- Grab a small or unhealthy lunch
- Come home exhausted and starving
- Eat an oversized dinner
- Snack while watching television
- Go to bed feeling stuffed
Then you wake up wondering, "Why can't I lose this belly?"
You may be undereating throughout the most active part of your day and then trying to catch up on calories when you're the least active.
If you're a sumo wrestler trying to gain mass, that can be a useful strategy.
If you're over 40 and trying to improve your health, energy, fitness and weight loss results, you need a different plan.
Why Saving Most of Your Calories for Night Can Backfire
Weight loss ultimately depends heavily on your total calorie intake, but the timing and structure of your meals can influence your hunger, energy, food choices and ability to remain consistent.
When you barely eat during the day, you may arrive home feeling like you could eat everything in the kitchen. That makes it much harder to control portions or choose nutritious foods.
A huge evening meal followed by snacks can also leave you feeling uncomfortable at bedtime. For some people, going to bed overly full may contribute to reflux, disrupted sleep and sluggishness the following morning.
Poor sleep can make the next day even harder by increasing fatigue, cravings and the desire for convenient, high-calorie foods.
That creates a cycle:
- Skip meals during the day.
- Become excessively hungry at night.
- Overeat during dinner and afterward.
- Sleep poorly.
- Wake up tired and repeat the pattern.
The goal isn't to follow a rigid meal schedule. It's to create a structure that helps you control hunger and make better decisions.
A Better Nutrition Plan for Adults Over 40
At Puravida Fitness, we encourage our clients to start putting more quality nutrition earlier in the day.
1. Eat a Legitimate Breakfast or First Meal
You don't necessarily have to eat the moment you wake up. However, if skipping breakfast causes you to overeat later, it may not be helping you.
Build your first meal around protein and minimally processed foods. Eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, protein shakes and lean meats can all be practical options.
2. Prioritize Protein at Lunch
A tiny lunch often leads to a huge dinner.
Include a good source of protein such as chicken, turkey, fish, lean beef, eggs or tofu. Add vegetables, fruit and an appropriate portion of carbohydrates based on your activity level and goals.
Protein helps support muscle maintenance, recovery and fullness---especially when combined with a consistent strength-training program.
3. Eat Real Food During the Day
You don't need a perfect diet. You need an eating plan you can consistently follow.
Focus most of your nutrition on:
- Lean protein
- Vegetables and fruit
- High-fiber carbohydrates
- Healthy fats
- Minimally processed foods
Planning meals ahead of time can prevent an exhausting day from turning into a night of uncontrolled eating.
4. Stay Hydrated
Thirst and dehydration can sometimes be mistaken for hunger or contribute to low energy. Keep water available throughout the day instead of trying to make up for poor hydration at night.
5. Stop Saving Half Your Calories for the Evening
You can still enjoy dinner with your family, but dinner doesn't need to become a reward for surviving the day without eating.
Whenever possible, give yourself approximately two to three hours between your last substantial meal and bedtime. Your body will continue digesting food while you sleep, but avoiding an enormous meal immediately before bed may help you feel more comfortable and sleep better.
"I Don't Have Time to Eat"
If you regularly say you don't have time to eat, it's time to challenge that belief.
You don't need an hour to prepare every meal. Keep simple options available:
- Protein shakes
- Greek yogurt and fruit
- Hard-boiled eggs
- Pre-cooked chicken
- Cottage cheese
- Tuna packets
- Chopped vegetables
- Leftovers from the previous night
Make time for your nutrition because your body will eventually reflect the habits you repeatedly practice.
