There are days when you feel as if you're fighting a battle.  You've got things coming at you from every direction...

  • Financial stresses
  • Family management
  • Careers / business
  • House projects
    Ugh.

Keeping yourself sane and healthy can feel like the biggest battle of all.

It can be easy to fall into "victim" mode and entertain the feelings of helplessness and just general 'beat down."

Romans 8:37 says differently.

"But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us"

According to this passage we can be victors rather than victims.  But we have to flip the switch.

One of the ways I have found to flip the switch is exercise.

This is not just a theory.   It has been proven by science.

Research shows exercise is a great natural drug to deal with anxiety, stress and depression.

Here are a few examples of scientific findings on how exercise helps you conquer anxiety and stress.

  • Exercise increases your heart rate and changes your brain chemistry by raising important neurotransmitters which decrease anxiety and increase motivation and focus.
  • Exercise activates frontal regions of the brain which gets you back into 'fight vs. flight' mode and gives you the ability to push back on whatever is causing you anxiety.
  • Exercising regularly builds up grit and toughness against stormy emotions.
  • Exercise releases feel-good endorphins, and other natural brain chemicals that can enhance your sense of well-being.

Many of my clients know how effective this is firsthand and so do I.

This morning I woke up with that heaviness on my chest.  Anxiety was high and I was feeling very "off."

I won't lie. Part of me wanted to skip the gym and wallow in my emotions. But I know better.

I know that once I get my workout in, the switch flips and my anxiety and depression disappear.

The workout ALWAYS takes care of it.

I go from wanting to hide and stay in bed to "let's get after it".

It's a drug-like effect.  I crave it because lately there have been a lot of days I have been "in it."

So I guess you could say I'm a druggie when it comes to exercise.

It's one of the ways I stay sane in this insane world.
