Inflammation is not always bad. We need some inflammation

Inflammation is actually a process that helps the body fight things that could cause harm like infections and injuries. It's a healing process that is completely normal and healthy. However, too much inflammation over time keeps the body in a constant state of alert and can begin to negatively impact organs and tissues.

Like many things, inflammation is good to a point and when it crosses the line and becomes chronic and excessive, you now have a problem.

That problem is not just stiffness and soreness. It is much more than that. It is a BIG deal!

Chronic Inflammatory Diseases are the Number 1 cause of sickness and death in the world!  In fact, more than 50% of ALL deaths can be attributed to inflammation related diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, kidney and liver diseases, and more.

How do you know if you are inflamed? Well, here's a list of symptoms tied into inflammation.

  • Body pain

  • Chronic fatigue and insomnia.

  • Depression, anxiety and mood disorders.

  • Gastrointestinal complications like constipation, diarrhea, and acid reflux.

  • Weight gain

  • Muscle loss

  • Frequent infections.

Isn't it funny how these symptoms are now commonplace in our society?

We accept them as normal aging and a part of life. But left unchecked, they can go from "mole hills" to mountains.

The first step to putting out the "fire" of inflammation is minimize or eliminate the sources. We have to quench them and put them out.

Here are the main sources of inflammation we deal with in our society:

  • Alcohol - It's not the calories it's the chemicals that screw up your metabolism and drive up inflammation. Having 1-2 adult beverages once a week is not a huge deal. It's when it becomes a frequent occurrence that you are feeding the "inflammation monster."

  • Processed meats - Think hot dogs and deli meats. These things contain additives and chemicals that drive up your inflammation.

  • Refined sugar - Not the sugar in fruit, but the man made sugars in things like yogurt, coffee drinks, and candy. These things are like throwing gas on the fire.

  • Vegetable oils - Not only do we cook with these but they are hidden in salad dressings, protein bars, peanut butter and many other foods. These oils are high in omega 6 fatty acids which are pro-inflammatory.

  • Chronic stress - Like inflammation, stress is not always bad. Excessive stress is when the issues arise. Stress won't just go away so how we deal with it is the game changer. Managing our time better, learning to prioritize, saying "no," and practicing calming activities are great ways to combat this.

The second step to combat inflammation is to increase your intake of natural anti-inflammatory substances such as omega 3 fish oils, tumeric, and coenzyme q10. These are pretty tough to get from our regular diets, so adding an anti-inflammatory supplement is a good way give the body what it needs to fight inflammation.
