Exercising is one of the best things you can do for your health, and you most definitely deserve a pat on the back for any amount of physical activity you’re doing. However, if you are performing your exercises wrong, or have no proper structure, or forget to nourish your body appropriately, you could end up hurting and not helping your body. As a leading fitness gym in Lakeville, Minnesota, Puravida Fitness has put together a list of the most common mistakes people make that could lead to fitness failure.

1. Incomplete programs
Many people only work on one aspect of fitness when real fitness actually requires a well-rounded approach. For example, if you have poor flexibility, your form on squats will be compromised, which can lead to an injury. Overworking the same muscle groups every day can also cause injury. This is why it is important to alternate which muscle groups you work on every day and have a balanced workout program.

2. Not focusing on nutrition
Too often, people join a gym with the hopes of losing weight by just exercising. The problem is you can’t outwork a bad diet. All the calories you burned in your workout can be undone with one bad eating decision. Plan your post-workout and daily meals according to your workout routine and your body, and make sure it includes enough protein to support muscle recovery and growth.

3. Not identifying goals and purpose
When there is no clearly defined destination, it makes it hard to stay motivated. Just saying “I want to get in shape” is vague and doesn’t indicate what that looks like. Also, why is it important? What will get you out of bed to workout in the morning, or what will get you to skip that tempting dessert? Without identifying these things, motivation will quickly disappear.

4. Pushing too hard too soon
You cannot go from couch potato to navy seal in a few weeks. Unfortunately, many people try only to end up overtrained or injured or both. Just because your mind is in the zone doesn’t mean your body is. It is essential to formulate a program so that you can set attainable goals. Once you reach them, only then push yourself for a little more, and so on.

5. No structure
Most people go to the gym and make things up as they go along, and there is no set and no defined way to progress. You cannot get specific results with a random approach. You cannot perform all kinds of exercises in a day. It would be best if you had a plan so that your time is used more effectively. Set a target like leg day or core day and stick to exercises targeting these muscle groups. Also, try to keep your workout simple and stick to the basics when you are just starting out.

6. No accountability or guidance
Most people do not do well holding themselves accountable, and it’s easy to make excuses and procrastinate when they are only accountable to themselves. Also, most people don’t have the time, the energy or the knowledge to put together an effective plan that keeps them motivated and seeing results. This is why most people prefer hiring the services of a professional fitness trainer. They can offer you support, tips and training to help you reach your fitness goals.
