How To Kick the Ass of Fear
"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear." 1 John 4:18.
Fear is defined as "an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat."
Do you remember the last time you felt REAL fear?
For me it was when I thought someone had grabbed my youngest daughter outside her dance studio.
We were there practicing our daddy daughter dance. I turned around for one second and in the next second, she was gone.
I started to call around for her.
No answer.
I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach.
My whole body tensed up and my heart felt like it was going to pound out of my chest.
The whole world came to a stop.
My other daughter started to panic and freak out.
For a moment I felt frozen in time.
Nothing else mattered except to find my daughter.
My precious daughter was missing and something had to be done!
At that moment I realized how much I loved her and could not imagine losing her.
I somehow managed to snap out of my momentary paralysis and began organizing some other parents to help me look for her.
It turned out she had snuck out of the dance studio when no one was looking and was hiding between two cars in the parking lot - thinking it was a game.
If I wasn't so relieved to see her safe and sound I would have lost my temper.
My body instantly relaxed, shedding what felt like 1,000 pounds of tension.
I was just happy my daughter was safe.
I'll never forget that moment. It brings up emotion just writing about it.
Fear can be a nasty opponent.
But remember, you have the POWER to kick the ass of fear.
Last weekend, at my monthly Men's Event, my friend Joe gave some great advice for overcoming fear. Joe is very familiar with fear. He is a former federal agent who has had to face it constantly in his profession. Here's what he had to say:
#1 - Focus on what you love more than what you fear. When my daughter was missing I could have just melted down and started yelling frantically, but that would have been a waste of time and I knew I had to pull it together and formulate a plan quickly.
#2 - Action destroys fear. I remember last year when the COVID lockdowns came out of nowhere. It could have been the end of my business if I would have just let fear take over. Instead, my staff and I took action and created a plan. A plan that we quickly executed into action. As a result, we are still in business today - and thriving nonetheless!
The fact that we focused on helping our clients rather than worrying about ourselves made a big difference. Had we gone into panic mode, I believe many of our clients would have thought we were doomed and probably quit working with us.
Joe's advice is spot on. And here is some more.
You get to choose how you react to FEAR.
You can either
Face
Everything
And
Rise
or
Forget
Everything
And
Run
What will you do the next time fear attacks you?
Who or what do you love MORE than what you fear?
What actions can you take to offset those fears?
One thing I know is being fit in MIND, BODY, and SPIRIT is like armor against fear.
