Are You Preventing Yourself From Success?
The passage this week has special meaning to me: "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9
As you probably know by now, I love football. It has always been a BIG part of my life.
I've played and I've coached. I'm not a huge TV watcher but I love watching football on the weekends during my down time.
Whenever I'm watching I go nuts when a winning team decides to take their foot off the pedal and play the dreaded "nickel prevent defense."
The premise of this defense is to give ground to the other team hoping they won't be able to score many points before time runs out in the game.
Basically it's playing "not to lose" versus trying to close out the game and WIN.
Ironically, what typically happens is the teams using this defense end up blowing the game.
A lot of people approach their health like playing the "nickel prevent defense".
They "give ground" in their life thinking eventually they will turn it around. Sadly, most of the time that never happens.
I have countless stories of clients who keep making excuses...allowing themselves to "give ground." One client in particular stands out. She kept making excuses for not working out and eating right.
Despite my best efforts she continued to go backwards.
There was always an excuse for not following through and it was always loaded with fear.
Fear of getting hurt.
Fear of what people would think if she took time for herself instead of working all the time.
Fear of her workouts interfering with the rest of her "to do" list.
Many times the fear of the unknown overrides being unsatisfied with where you are at.
Eventually she quit working with me and kept saying when her work slowed down she would be back.
To her credit, she did come back. But not until she had gained over 50 pounds! This story has a happy ending. She put aside the excuses and the fear and came out feeling happier and healthier than she has in her entire life.
I get it. Fear is scary. Creating change is scary.
I'm here to tell you not to be afraid or discouraged because God is with you wherever you go. "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go..."
He also puts people in your path to help you move forward.
I would love to be that person for you. Nothing fires me up more than helping someone transform their body and their life.
