Lessons Learned From Basketball

One of my all time favorite things to do is watch my nephew play basketball!  He's been playing ever since he could stand - thanks to his dad's love for the game and the Little Tykes hoop that was a permanent fixture in their house.  Every chance he could get, he was throwing the ball into the net!

This past week I had the incredible opportunity to watch him live out a dream by playing in the MN State High School Basketball Tournament at Target Center! Nothing compares!

As I watched him race up and down the same court where Kevin Garnett once stood and nailed his 3 pointers, I couldn't help but reflect on all the time and effort it took for him to get to that place:

  • The YMCA teams for littles where they often just carried the ball and ran to the net
  • The years and years of traveling teams with his dad as coach
  • More years on AAU teams with far away practices and tournaments every weekend
  • 4 more years on the high school team with the honor of co-captain this year

All of these experiences were instrumental in developing his skill, discipline and character - both on and off the court.  A Nerf net on the back of the front door eventually replaced the Little Tykes hoop so that as he grew, every chance he could get, he was throwing the ball into the net!  And college basketball was always on the TV.

Why am I telling you this?

My nephew did not wake up one day and make it to the State Tournament the next day.

No.

He put in the work. Years and years of work. He put in the time, the energy, the consistent effort and the focus.

He dedicated hours upon hours to practice, develop his strength and conditioning, watch videos and run plays. He worked out in the gym and was intentional with his nutrition.

He developed habits that became part of his daily routine and played a major role in all of his success.

The same is true for fitness.

Results don't happen overnight. We don't lose weight by changing nothing.

Results require work. Results require effort...and time... and focus.

I think you get the picture.

It won't always be a piece of cake. There will be setbacks.  But that is all part of the plan.

The testing of character is part of what builds character.

Like my nephew, consistency over time is what it takes to build habits that will last and get the results you want to see.
